Derek Green Supports Henry H. Houston Elementary’s “Autism Awareness Day”

PHILADELPHIA (April 20, 2015) – In honor of National Autism Awareness Month, Derek Green Esquire, will support Henry H. Houston Elementary School’s Autism Awareness Day on Monday, April 27, 2015, to help build awareness about Autism and provide resources for children with special needs. For many years, Derek has been a leader in the Autism community by helping children like his son Julian, who attends Houston Elementary.

For the past 12 years, Derek and, his wife Sheila, have been advocates in this community and have helpedto provide information and resources to families living with Autism. Together, they have raised over $35,000 for research, outreach, and advocacy for Autism Speaks and have been a top fundraising team for the annual Walk Now For Autism Speaks Philadelphia event. The Green family were alsohighlighted in People Magazine for working with Developmental Pediatrician Dr. Wendy Ross, to help improve air travel for people with Autism at the Philadelphia International Airport.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 68 American children are autistic and an estimated 1 out of 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls are diagnosed with Autism in the United States. Their son Julian, who is now 14, was diagnosed with Autism at age 2. With the proper research, the Green family were able to provide Julian with an adaptive Autism and educational support network by enrolling him in Houston Elementary.

Houston Elementary is driven by consistent, school-wide expectations, by utilizing their method entitled “Houston’s B.A.S.E.” (Behavioral, Academic, Social, and Emotional Expectations), which gives every student the opportunity to excel academically regardless of their limitations. Considering this holistic approach to education, Derek and Sheila made the commitment to be active in supporting Houston and the school’s Autistic Support Classes. “Without Houston and its outstanding Principals, Teachers, Support Staff, and Volunteers, we don’t know if Julian would have made the great progress that he has made over the years. We are so grateful for all that they have done for Julian and our family,” says Derek.

This year, for Autism Awareness Month, Derek wanted to support all of the accomplishments Houston Elementary has provided for his family and the community; which is the reason for this event to be free and open to students, parents, teachers, and Autism organizations. Autism Awareness Day will be heldfrom 11:30am – 1pm inside the library. There will be a press conference from 11am – 11:30am held outside on the front stairs of the school. Also there will be featured guest speakers (who will speak during the press conference) including: Derek and Sheila Green, Terri Matthews from Jaden’s Voice, and representatives from Houston Elementary. Location: Henry H. Houston Elementary: 7300 Rural Lane Philadelphia PA, 19119, (215) 248 – 6603. For more information or to volunteer at the event, contact: Press inquiries, contact:
